¹ I have not been able to trace this sentence in the *Mahābhāṣya*, but its purport has been sufficiently explained at the very commencement of that work. Cf. also *Kumārasambhava* ii 17, where this view is clearly mentioned, although Mallinātha would explain the *catuṣṭayī pravṛtti* with reference to the four *vivartas* of *vāc*.
