v1.c5.45
⁴ Patañjali refers to a large number of poetical works (ed. Kielhorn I 283, 340, 426, 444; II 34, 102, 119, 167, 313, 315; III 143, 338 etc.), which fact apparently indicates a considerable poetical activity in his age, preluding a systematic investigation of poetic principles; but there is no reference to Alaṃkāra literature in his time.
