³ Mammaṭa demonstrates with some care that it is not necessary to accept the ten guṇas of Vāmana, but that it is quite enough if we postulate three comprehensive excellences, viz., ojas (energy), prasāda (lucidity) and mādhurya (sweetness). If we examine the guṇas of Vāmana critically, we find that some of them can very well be included in these three; some constitute mere absence
