Puṣyamitra, Agnimitra, and Vasumitra are clearly taken from the dynasty of the Çuṅgas, formed by the first through the deposition of the last Maurya in 178 B. C.¹ Contact with Yavanas in his time is recorded and the horse sacrifice is doubtless traditional, but equally it may reflect the sacrifice of Samudragupta, the most striking event of the early Gupta history, since it asserted the imperial sway of the family. The rest of the play is based on the normal model.
