¹ The Sanhitâ consists of two parts; the Ârchika and Staubhika. The Ârchika, as adapted to the special use of the priests, exists in two forms, called Gânas, or Song-books, the Veyagâna and Âranyagâna. The Staubhika exists in the same manner as Ûhagâna and Uhyagâna. Cf. Benfey, Preface to his edition of the Sâma-veda-ârchika, Leipzig, 1848, and Weber, Ind. Studien, i. 30. The supposition that the modern origin of some of the hymns of the Rig-veda could be proved by their not occurring in the Sâma-veda, has been well refuted by Dr. Pertsch.
