∗ May not Apa-Bharaṇîs have been so named from this circumstance? Bharaṇî appears to be an older name, changed afterwards into Apa-Bharaṇî, in the same manner, Mûla into Mûla-barhaṇî, and Jyeshṭhâ into Jyeshṭhaghni. Perhaps the description of Apa-Bharaṇî in Taitt, Br i. 5, 1, may be so understood. It says :—
