¹ Rig. I, 164, 12,—प॑ञ्च॒पाद॑म् पि॒तरं॑ द्वाद॑शाकृतिं दि॒व आहुः॒ परे॑ अ॒र्धे पु॒रीषि॑णम् । अ॒येमे॑ अ॒न्य उ॒परे॑ वि॒चक्ष॑णं स॒प्तच॑क्रे ष॒ळर॑ आहु॒रर्पि॑तम् ॥ For वि॒चक्ष॑णम् A. V. (IX, 9, 12) reads वि॒चक्ष॑णे; while Śaṅkarâchârya in his gloss on Prashnopanishad takes उ and परे as two different words. Śaṅkarâchârya's explanation of परे अ॒र्धे is also noteworthy. He translates it by तृतीयस्यां दिवि, 'in the third heaven,' the seat of the third step of Viṣṇu, meaning that the five-footed year-god is then hidden in the remotest part of the heaven.
