v1.c8.s9.27
² As in the Upaniṣads the development of the Ātman conception is traced to the true Ātman through the preliminary steps of the puruṣa in the eye, in the reflected image, in the shadow and in the dream-picture, to which the prāṇa or breath of life is often added, so we find in remarkable agreement also among the primitive races, the breath, the “little dweller in the eye,” the reflected image, the shadow, and visions, as preliminary steps to the belief in a soul. (Cf. E. B. Tylor, “Primitive Culture,” London, 1903, 1, pp. 430 ff. Fritz Schultze, Psychologie der Naturvölker, Leipzig, 1900, pp. 254 ff.)
