Side by side with Niyoga, the widow remarriage also prevailed in Vedic society. The suggestion that the proposal for a remarriage was made to the widow at the funeral of her husband is preposterous; it is based upon a wrong interpretation of a Vedic stanza¹. There is however no doubt that widow remarriages used to take place not infrequently in the Vedic age.
