In other respects, the duties of neighbours were not neglected and people took sympathetic and beneficial interest in the business and affairs of their absent neighbours. The extreme usefulness and value of such neighbourly sympathy will be better relations and as Tod observes, scandal itself never suggests any other tie to the devotion of a man.
