¹ Brihaspati, III. 1-2. Vide also Sukranīti, IV. 5, 153. A good description of the actual proceedings in a criminal case is to be found in Sūdraka’s Mrichchakatikā. Probably, this portion of the drama, like the rest, was based upon a much earlier work entitled ‘Chārudatta’ by Bhāsa; but, unfortunately, the whole of this latter book has not yet been discovered.
