This plant of *dharma* should be carefully nurtured for all acts grow from it. That king who, though deprived of *artha* and *kāma*, clings to *dharma*, reigns long.⁴ *Daṇḍa nīti* is like the reins of a horse, or the goad of an elephant, to men of the four *varṇas*, to keep them in the ordained path of *dharma*.
