Mānavadharmaśāstra refers to sea fights and attests to the use of boats for naval warfare.⁴² The sailor is called naukākarmajīva.⁴³ Thus in Vedic, Epic and the Dharmaśāstra literature we find that naval warfare is mentioned as a distinct entity, attesting a continuous naval tradition from the earliest times.
