The diplomatic system gained more and more importance with the march of time. By the epoch of the *Atharva Veda Samhitā*¹⁰ we find the monarch as the centre of Hindu diplomacy occupying a seemingly absolute position, but subjected to discipline by his Purohita and public opinion. In this respect the ancient king differed from the Archon Basileus of Athens and the *Rex sacrorum* of early Rome.
