Among the earliest sculptures known so far are those at Bhārhut.¹³¹ Here in the stūpa are found boats, chariots drawn by horses, carriages drawn by bullocks, many musical instruments, and flags. Here again we notice the old Indian broadsword as described by Megasthenes. ‘All wear swords of vast breadth, though scarce exceeding three cubits in length. When they engage in close fight they grasp these with both their hands so that the blow may be the stronger’.
