The *Baudhāyana Dharmaśāstra* speaks of *Samudra-samyānam* and interprets it as *nāvā dvīpāntarāgamanam*, i.e., sailing to other lands by ships. This very term occurs in the *nāvādhyakṣa* section of the *Kauṭalīya Arthaśāstra*.¹¹⁸
