∗ Śāntiparvan LXVII 17-32. ‘Kartrīneno gamiṣyati’ ‘the sins will devolve upon the authors (of the sinful acts)’ is the reading in the Calcutta edition. This is preferable to the reading ‘vidhāsyāmo dhanam tava’ of the South Indian recension, since the object of the people’s address is clearly to quiet Manu’s apprehension of sinful contamination.
