This book is a study of the Late Bronze and Early Iron Ages in the lands bordering the eastern Mediterranean. Evidence for the history of this age is not lacking. Archæology can provide a skeleton; Greek and Hebrew legend and the surviving fragments of Lydian and Phœnician tradition, with occasional assistance from Hittite or Egyptian documents, enable us to clothe the skeleton with flesh and blood. Nearly a quarter of the book consists of a critique of the evidence. The remainder is an attempt to give a continuous narrative of the period, and to place in their historical context the brilliant Hebrew legends of the Judges and of Saul and David, and the Greek epic traditions of Minos and Theseus and of the wars of Thebes and Troy.
