²⁹⁹ It is to be noted that so early a writer as शान्तरक्षित in his तत्त्वसंग्रह (कारिका 3584, G. O. S.) expressly attributes the verse (पुराणं मानवो धर्मः साङ्गो वेदश्चिकित्सितम्। आज्ञासिद्धानि चत्वारि न हन्तव्यानि हेतुभिः) to मनु which was not commented upon by मेधातिथि and later commentators. शान्तरक्षित flourished about 750 A. D. i. e. a century earlier than मेधातिथि.
