v2.c24.s1.295

It is stated in the Udvāhatattva⁸³² (p. 144) that the word '*śrī*' is to be prefixed when referring by name to a deity or a teacher, to the place of one's teacher, to a holy place or to the presiding deity of a holy place, to one who has secured Yogic *siddhis* or to those who have secured by sacrifices the worlds of bliss; and Raghunandana adds that according to the usage of respectable people '*śrī*' is prefixed to names of such persons while they are alive. The same work also tells us that women of the dvijātis were to have the honorific suffix '*devī*' added to their names and of the śūdra caste the word 'dāsī'. This is still the practice particularly in Bengal and Northern India.
