It has now to be seen who (other the man himself) are liable to pay a man's debt. The liability to pay another's debt may arise on three grounds, (1) religious, (2) equitable and moral, (3) legal, such as agency (express or implied) or authority. That the sons and grandsons of the original debtor are liable to pay on religious grounds the debt of the father is expressly stated by numerous writers such as Kauṭ.⁷⁴³ III. 11, Yāj. II. 50, Nār. IV. 4, Bṛ. (S. B. E. vol. 33 p. 328 verse 49), Kāt. (560), Vṛddha-Hārīta VII. 250-51, Viṣṇu Dh. S. VI. 27.
