¹⁶³⁸ Vide Yāj. I. 3 for the 14 Vidyāsthānas. For the four upavedas which raise the number to 18 vide n. 17 p. 10 above. Acc. to the Nyāyasudhā (p. 183) Āyurveda, Dhanurveda, Gāndharvaveda and Arthaśāstra are four Upavedas; Mīmāṁsā and Nyāya (logic) are two upāṅgas, śikṣā (not the Vedāṅga on phonetics) is separately mentioned because there are works on phonetics like that of Kātyāyana laying down special rules for distinct śākhās. Daṇḍanīti is the same as Arthaśāstra.
