⁸²⁵ मातृदत्त on हिरण्य. गृ. explains 'माध्यावर्षः प्रौष्ठपदो मासस्तत्र भवम्' i. e. he derives the name from मध्य and वर्ष (year), the 13th of the dark half of Bhādrapada being almost the middle of the year (when the year begins with चैत्र).
