Banaras has been known for centuries under five different names viz. Vārāṇasī, Kāśī, Avimukta, Ānandakānana and Śmaśāna or Mahāśmaśāna. The Kāśīkhaṇḍa states that Śaṅkara first called it Ānandakānana and then Avimukta.¹⁴¹⁷
