¹⁷⁰⁸ In the तन्त्र works the letters of the bījas in mantras are often indicated in a roundabout or mystic way. One example about the प्राथमिक-बीज ह्रीं may be set out here. प्राणेशस्तैजसारूढो भेरुण्डा व्योमबिन्दुमान् (महानिर्वाण V. 10), here ह् is प्राणेश, र् is तैजस, ई is भेरुण्डा, व्योमबिन्दु is अनुस्वार and this gives the bīja ह्रीम्; ह्रीं and क्री are described in नित्याषोडशिका० (I. 162-64) in a similar way. ह्रीं and श्रीं are respectively the बीजs of माया (or भुवनेश्वरी) and of लक्ष्मी. Vide मातृकानिघण्टु (Tāntrik Texts Vol I. 5-22, pp 26-34 for बीजनिघण्टु, pp 35-45 for मातृकानिघण्टु I. e. for ओम् and letters of the alphabet from अ to क्ष) Every bīja mantra must have the *bindu* on it, as in Hrīṁ, Śrīṁ, Krīṁ &c. 'विन्दुयोगं विना बीजत्वायोगात्' (सेतुबन्ध p 50 on नित्याषोडशिकार्णव).
