There appears to have been great rivalry between the Hindu and Buddhist tantras. The Śaktisaṅgama-tantra, one of the most popular and most exhaustive works on tantra, states that Devī manifests herself for the destruction of Bauddha and other heretical sects, for the removal of the confusing admixture of different cults, for the establishment of the (true) cult, for the protection of what the brāhmanas stand for and for the perfect attainment of mantra-śāstra.¹⁷¹⁹ The Bauddha tantras, on the other hand, were not slow to retaliate.
