¹⁹⁸² तस्माद्गीतय सामानि न प्रगीतानि मन्त्रवाक्यानि । शबर on IX. 2. 2, सामवेदे सहस्रं गीत्युपाया । ... गीतिर्नाम क्रिया । सा आभ्यन्तरप्रयत्नजनितस्वरविशेषाणामभिव्यञ्जिका । सा सामशब्दाभिलप्या । सा नियतपरिमाणा । ऋचि च गीयते । शवर on पू मी सू IX 2 29 In the महाभाष्य on the Vārtika सर्वे देशान्तरे in the first आह्निक we read चत्वारो वेदा. साङ्गा. सरहस्या बहुधा विभिन्ना एकशतमध्वर्युशाखाः सहस्रवर्त्मा सामवेद एकविंशतिधा बाह्वृच्यं नवधायर्वणो वेद &c. Here the word शाखा is not used in relation to सामवेद but the word वर्त्मन् (way) As शबर expressly (*Continued from last page*) says that in सामवेद there are a thousand गीत्युपायाः, सहस्रवर्त्मा means 'सहस्रगीत्यु- पायान्' and it is not correct to render सहस्रवर्त्मा as सहस्रशाखः, as many scholars do. The विष्णुपुराण III 6 gives a confused account of the recensions of the सामवेद, verses 3 and 6 speaking of 1000 संहिताs propagated by सुकर्मा and 24 संहिताs propagated by a pupil of हिरण्यनाभ respectively.
