¹⁹⁹⁴ दिष्टगताग्निहोत्रे महापितृयज्ञे वा श्रूयते। अधस्तात्समिधं धारयन्ननुद्रवेदुपरि हि देवेभ्यो धारयति। quoted by तन्त्रवा. on III. 4. 6 (Śabara has dropped this sūtra along with five preceding ones); it then proceeds 'पित्र्ये होमेऽधस्तात् सुग्दण्डस्य समिद्धारयितव्या।' दैवे च पुनरुपरिष्टादिति। विधित्वे चैवमादीनामुक्तः कल्पनाप्रकारः। तस्माद्विधिरिति॥' p. 899. It may be noted that the स्मृतिच (I. pp. 72-73) mentions this Vedic passage and the conclusion in its discussion about the validity of marriage with one's maternal uncle's daughter or one's paternal aunt's daughter, after quoting a Śatapatha text I. 8. 3. 6 'तस्मात्समानादेव पुरुषादत्ता चाद्यश्च जायेते इदं हि चतुर्थे पुरुषे तृतीये संगच्छामहे इति विदेवं दीव्यमाना जात्या आसते' (where the verbs are in the present tense and not in the optative mood and yet the Sm. C. holds that it is not a mere anuvāda, but it leads to the formulation of a vidhi). Vide also परा मा. I. 2 pp. 66-67 for a similar treatment. It was held that the use of words like 'hi' indicating a reason or 'vai' (indicating what is well-known) is not generally allowed in a vidhi. Vide शबर on पू. मी सू IX. 1. 41 (p 1690) 'न च विधीयमाने वैशब्दो भवति प्रसिद्धवचनो ह्येष दृष्टः, न वै स्त्रैणानि सख्यानि सन्ति-इति यथा।' न वै &c occurs in Rg. X. 95. 15
