2041a The objections about ‘catvāri śrṅgā’ and the quotations are raised in P. M. S. I. 2. 31, which is a very long sūtra, and are answered in I. 2 32-45 P. M. S I 2 38 deals with the verse चत्वारि शृङ्गा This verse is explained in Nirukta XIII 7, in पतञ्जलि's महाभाष्य, by Sabara, by Kumārila *(Continued from last page)* (in Tantravārtika p. 155-156), by Durga and Sāyaṇa. These differ a good deal (even Kumārila widely differs from Śabara). जर्भरी तुर्फरीतू are epithets of the Aśvins and explained in Nirukta (XIII. 5), Kānukā (in Nirukta V. 10), Kīkaṭa and other words in Nirukta VI. 32. Yāska says 'Kīkaṭa is a country in which non-Āryans resided, while Tantravārtika (p. 158) first explained it as meaning a country and affirmed that a country is eternal. Then Kumārila proposes that Kīkaṭa means 'close-fisted', Pramaganda 'usurious man', 'naicā-śākham' means wealth of an impotent person. Śabara on P. M. S.
