I conclude this account of land routes and conveyances by a reference to the facilities for travelling that were offered by the State. The supply of water and shade was one of the concerns of Government. Trees were planted along the roads, and water-storages were set up, ministering to the comfort of passers-by. There was also provision made by hotelkeepers for the supply of food and resting-place to travellers.¹ These facilities anticipated those of Asoka as set forth in his Rock Edict II.
