We have now to examine a peculiar custom reflected in the *Jātakas*, that of choosing a successor to the vacant throne. We mean the choice by the festal car—the *Phussaratha*.⁶ The ceremony is described in not less than four *Jātakas*⁷ with more or less details, the fullest description being given in the *Mahājanaka Jātaka*.⁸
