c4.t6.8
Of other items of expenditure by the state or by the king in person, we have no knowledge. It may be presumed, however, that some of the economic and social functions of the state, of which no direct information is available, must have come in for a large item of expenditure. Works of public utility, comparatively limited in those days, must have entailed an appreciable expenditure.⁶ We have instances, moreover, of the state bearing the cost of, or awarding scholarships to, students who went to far-off universities like Takkasilā for purposes of education.⁷
