As stated before, students are always spoken of as going to Takkasilā to complete their education and not to begin it. As a rule, the time for beginning the higher studies at Takkasilā is given as the age of sixteen (solasavassakāle),⁶ or when the students come of age (vayapatte).⁷ Naturally, students of a maturer age only could be sent so far away from their homes.
