| 142 | Bhogavatī | The golden city of the Nāga Varuṇa: a glorious description of its splendours is given in several *gāthās*. | VI, 269-G. 1164. | It is considered as a mythical city. But Mr. De in his remarkable work on *The Rasātala or the Underworld* identifies it with Balkh—the Bactria of the Greeks. "The name of Bhogavatī" he says, "is the Sanskritized form by Beṇā or the modern Kṛṣṇa *J. B. B. R. A. S.*, III (N. S.), pp. 87 *ff*. Beṇṇākarpara is mentioned as a *Bhāga* of King Pravarasena II in the *Seoni Copper plate Grant* (Circa 430 A. D.) Fleet, *Gupta Inscriptions*, No. 56. A city by name Beṇṇāyada occurs also in two old Jaina stories given in Jacobi's *Erzählungen* (Trans. J.J. Meyer, *Hindu Tales*, pp. 205, 223), which we take to be the same as our Beṇṇākaṭa. |
