(4) Preparation of a Census of Households in the village (*gṛihāṇām saṁkhyānena*) showing (a) the number of each house in the register; (b) whether it was taxed or tax-free (*karada* or *akarada*); (c) composition of each household as to number of Brāhmaṇas, Kshatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras living in it (*etāvat chāturvarṇyam*); (d) number of cultivators (*karshaka*), herdsmen (*gorakshaka*), traders (*vaidehaka*), artisans (*kāru*), workmen (*karmakara*), serfs (*dāsa*); (e) number of men and live-stock; (f) amount contributed by each household to the State in the forms of cash, labour, tolls and military service (*hiraṇya-vishṭi-śulka-*)
