Kauṭilya classifies waterways into (1) ways along the coast (*Kūla-patha*), (2) ways through mid-ocean (to foreign countries) (*Saṁyāna-patha*). Of these, again, he prefers the former as a source of greater profit for its access to many port-towns (*Panya-paṭṭana-bāhulyāt*).
