The Viceroyalties were recruited from the princes of blood royal called *Kumāras* or *Āryaputras* in Asoka's inscriptions. Asoka served as his father's Viceroy at Ujjain, and again at Taxila, where he replaced his elder brother, Prince Susīma. Prince Kuṇāla, Asoka's son, served as his Viceroy at Taxila. Asoka also appointed his brother, Prince Tissa, as deputy king, *Uparāja*, to act for him at headquarters. The heir-apparent was known as the *Yuvarāja*.
