Kauṭilya [XII. 2] provides for emergency which may cause the king's absence from the country, in which case an officer will take his place thus rendered vacant (*śūnya*) and will be appropriately called *Śūnya-Pāla*, a sort of a Deputy-king like Asoka's *Uparāja*.
