**Patanjali.** Patañjali (c. 2nd century B.C.) describes Pāṭaliputra as '*anuśoṇam Pāṭaliputram*' in his *Mahābhāshya* [II, 1, 2] which means that Patañjali knew Pāṭaliputra as situated on the banks of the Śoṇa. The lofty buildings and the parapets for which the city was known impressed Patañjali so much that he refers to them as grammatical examples. Thus in IV, 3.2 he says: "*Pāṭaliputrakāḥ prāsādāḥ Pāṭaliputrakāḥ prākārāḥ iti.*"
