**Fa-hien.** We may further note that the Chinese traveller Fa-hien who travelled in India between the years 319-414 A.D. saw the Mauryan palace in a good condition and describes it as follows: "The king's (Asoka's) palace in the city, with its various halls, all built by spirits who piled up stones, constructed walls and gates, carved designs, engraved and inlaid, after no human fashion, is still in existence."
