For purposes of the king's safety at these public interviews, Kauṭilya makes the provision [I. 21] that the king must not give interviews to strangers, saints, and ascetics unless he is duly protected by his trustworthy bodyguard (*āptaśastragrāhādhishṭhita*). He is also to interview the ambassadors from foreign kings with his whole Council of Ministers in attendance (*Mantriparishadā Sāmantadūtam*).
