These admonitions of Kauṭilya are echoed by Asoka in his Rock Edict VI: "For there is no satisfaction of mine in exertion (*Usṭānam*) or despatch of business (*Arthasaṁtīrana*). My highest duty is, indeed, the promotion of the good of all (*Sarva-loka-hitam*). Of that, again, the root is this: exertion (*Utthānaṁ*) and despatch of business. There is no higher work than the promotion of the common weal."
