According to Megasthenes, wood was the material mainly used in the construction of Pāṭaliputra, because it was a city built on the banks of rivers and had to be protected against floods by wood [I. 6]. It may be noted that excavations at the site of Pāṭaliputra have brought to light portions of wooden palisade at depth of ten to fifteen feet below the surface. These must have formed portions of the ancient wooden wall of the Maurya city.
