**Warden of the Marches** (*Antapāla*). A Warden of the Marches (*Antapāla*) [II. 21] policed the borders, issued sealed passports which had to be presented later to the Officials under the Superintendent of Customs, and levied a Toll upon all traffic passing the frontier viz., 1¼ *paṇa* on each load of merchandise as road cess (*vartanī*), 1 *paṇa* on each load of single-hoofed beasts, ½ *paṇa* per load of double-hoofed quadrupeds, and 1/16 *paṇa* on each load carried on the head.
