**Superintendent of Excise** (*Sūrādhyaksha*) [II. 25]. The Excise Superintendent controlled the manufacture and sale of liquor and intoxicating drugs. The manufacture was carried on by State Agency in Government Breweries and Distilleries and also by private persons under licence. Foreign liquor had to pay an Excise duty of 5 per cent on the sale-proceeds.
