The villages were situated or planted within a convenient distance of each other so as to afford mutual protection (*Krośa-dvikrośa-sīmānamanyo- *nyāraksham*). Natural boundaries were availed of as far as possible to separate them, e.g., a river, a mountain, a forest, and the like (*nadīśailavana*).
