Left pretty much to itself, the Buddhist Saṃgha tried some experiments in administration which are unique in Indian history. In the first place, all its rules are practically common to monks and nuns. The Buddhist texts are at pains to repeat them for both. In the second place, the order believed in the communism of property for itself. All the property of the Saṃgha was open to the use of all brethren from wheresoever they might come.
