² One type of gun commonly used in Southern India is thus described by Phillip Baldeus, the Dutch Missionary: ‘they are made of long and broad Bars of Iron, joined together with Iron Hoops’; Churchill’s *Voyages* Vol. III, p. 652. The other type was not much better. For a learned account of Indian cannons see Irvine, *Army of the Indian Moghuls*, pp. 113-32.
