³ The earliest specimens of Ābhīrokti are found in the *Nāṭyaśāstra* of Bharata, a work of the second or third century A.D. (P. D. Gune, *Introduction to Bhavisayattakahā*, pp. 50-51). These are clearly very much allied to Sanskrit.
