v1.c14.s2.1
The desert or arid zone of India covers an area of 317090 km, of which 62% lies in Rajasthan, 20% in Gujarat, and the remaining 18% in Punjab, Haryana, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. The Dts lying wholly or largely in the arid zone are Ganganagar, Bikaner, Jaisalmer, Barmer, Jalor, Jodhpur, Churu, Nagaur, Jhunjhunu and Sikar in Rajasthan, Kutch and Jamnagar in Gujarat, Ferozepore and Bhatinda in Punjab and Hissar in Haryana. Since the maximum area of arid zone in any single state lies in Rajasthan, this part of the desert has received the largest attention from researchers and is dealt with here.
